What 1’000 kilometres taught me about goal setting

Dear reader,

So this happened during the Christmas holidays!!! I made it – 1’000 km walking during 2021🏆🎉🚶‍♀️

The rule was that I had to be in sports gear, and it needed to be at least a 3 km continous walk in order to count.
*I use the Adidas running App (free version) to track my progress, in case you were wondering.

For 2022 I tried to choose the easy way and stick with 1’000 km walking for this year too, now that I know I can do it. It felt safe. It felt ”enough”.

But after boasting about my 1’000 km achievement all over social media, an old friend challenged me big time, ”Why not walk the distance of Sweden, 1’571 km?”.

I obviously couldn’t let go of what he had written, and decided to go for the massive ”holy sh**” goal!

I’ve now” googeld” the length of Sweden, and it’s actually closer to 1’572 km from Smygehuk in the south to Treriksröset in the north, so bring it on! 🚶‍♀️🎉

What many of you might not know is that I’ve been entertaining an old, but very stubborn belief about myself and my abilities. My mantra has often been “It seems to work for others, but not for me!”, be it weight loss, business goals, or other life style habits.

Often I’ve given up because I didn’t see immediate results, and I would go ahead and throw myself yet another pity party, including a limitless intake of sugary or salty “emotion relievers”!

Yes, I’ve read tons of books and taken part in a million (almost…) on-line courses on habit changing and goal setting, but this walking 1’000 km goal of all things was a huge lightbulb moment for me!

It showed me in a very visual way (see pic below) how seemingly small but consistent efforts over time will lead to massive results! A great lesson for an impatient person like myself🤣

So now I’m challenging you! What is a (preferably measurable) goal you want to set for yourself in 2022, that you almost don’t believe you can achieve?

Also, if you want to join me for some of my 1’572 kilometres should you be close to Zürich ZH or Martigny VS where I do my walks, feel free to drop me a message!

Warm regards,
Karin
